With the launch of Windows 10 in , Microsoft switched to what it calls a "Windows as a Service" model, promising more frequent feature updates in lieu of the slower major releases seen in years past. But, over time, it's become apparent that this twice-per-year update cadence has become a bit of a headache for IT admins as they race the clock against each update's month support cycle.
Today, Microsoft announced opens in new tab it's giving businesses a break by, most notably, extending its support lifecycle for current and future Windows 10 updates. Starting today, all currently supported feature updates for Windows 10 Enterprise and Education will be supported for 30 months from their release date. That gives administrators a bit of added breathing room for ensuring that any kinks are worked out of their systems before moving to the next supported update.
Going forward, however, things get a little more complicated. According to Microsoft, all future updates with a targeted release for the month of September will be supported for 30 months. Those targeted for March releases will be supported for 18 months from their release date. The difference, Microsoft says, will give customers with longer deployment cycles the option of sticking with September releases, while those who want to update faster can opt for March releases.
For the average consumer, things will remain the same with an month support cycle for Windows 10 Home and Pro. The extended support cycle for semi-annual updates will apply only to Windows 10 Enterprise and Education editions beginning with Windows 10 versions and In addition to the new support timelines, administrators are also getting a couple of new tools to help ensure app compatibility. The first of the tools is called "Desktop Analytics," and it's designed to give organizations more insight into their update readiness based on the fleet of apps they're running.

Today, we're announcing that Windows Analytics is being expanded to Desktop Analytics—a new cloud-based service integrated with ConfigMgr and designed to create an inventory of apps running in the organization, assess app compatibility with the latest feature updates of Windows 10 and Office ProPlus, and create pilot groups that represent the entire application and driver estate across a minimal set of devices.
The company is also launching "Desktop App Assure," a new service that should help quickly address any issues with app compatibility issues on Windows If you run into issues with a particular app following a Windows 10 or Office ProPlus update, App Assure can be used to file a ticket through FastTrack, and a Microsoft engineer will then follow up with you to work through the problem until it is fixed.

Ah, and if our mega rapid releases break your apps, you can pay use more money except those already paying us our extortion, I mean service fees for Enterprise and get Desktop App Assure service. Microsoft's recent adjustments to Windows 10 will create a pile-up of deadlines later this year when three different editions exhaust their support almost simultaneously. In the last five weeks, Microsoft has extended support for two versions - Windows 10 and Windows 10 - by six months each, part of the company's concessions to the chaos caused by the COVID pandemic.
As Figure 1 shows, the extensions to Windows 10 and pushed their end-of-support very near the end-of-life for Windows 10an month upgrade. Windows 10's suplort laid out. By adding six months to Windows Enterprise and Windows EducationMicrosoft made it easier for those still on that two-and-a-half-year-old operating system to jump over and instead upgrade to Take a look at Figure 1 again.
With its original retirement deadline of Aprilwould have had to be upgraded to in the latter's first five months. Only the most agile enterprise would have been able to pilot, test and then deploy an upgrade in that short time. But the extension's suppott six months bumps up the overlap to 11 months. Almost half of that is now in the past. Customers running now have until October to upgrade to without missing a security update beat. A side-effect will be a larger-than-usual number of corporate machines on Windows 10the latest version that comes with 30 months of support.
Not only will business PCs running migrate to - even with 30 months of support, the conservative plan is an everymonth upgrade - but those remaining on have a shot at as well.
It's unclear whether Suppoort meant to do this, but the extension given to Windows 10 - increasing the lifespan to 36 months - confirmed that a slight increase in support gave enterprises much more flexibility, in that they had a legitimate choice between upgrading annually or refreshing windows 10 extended support 30 months free two years.
Giving Windows 10 Home and Windows 10 Pro users six more months to run the year-and-a-half-old version was another tip to the chaos that accompanied COVID stay-at-home, extendev directives. Given Microsoft's penchant for prioritizing commercial customers over consumers, it's likely that the extension was prompted by the company's concerns about business PCs running Pro being orphaned from security updates.
Still, Windows 10 extended support 30 months free may also have assumed that Windows 10 Home systems had been temporarily pressed into work duties and so needed upgrading later, not sooner. There was a hint in the windowe that upgrade postponement is at the windowe of Microsoft's mind. That Microsoft bit needs parsing.
