In reply to DaveM's post on June 18, Hiya Dave Thanks for your speedy response, much appreciated. That's fine in, say, a managed desktop environment such as many organisations run and let's be clear - disabling Windows Update isn't the issue in that situation because there are professionals managing the rollout of patches with the obvious exception of the organisations that just got hit by WannaCry.
But your average person is simply not going to keep on top of these things which is why auto-updaters are built into so many software products these days. Obviously they're in Windows, same with Mac OS and iOS, same with browsers like Chrome and Firefox and same again with the apps themselves on a device like your iPhone by virtue of the App Store automatically keeping them current.
Often, the updates these products deliver patch some pretty nasty security flaws. If you had any version of Windows since Vista running the default Windows Update, you would have had the critical Microsoft Security Bulletin known as "MS" pushed down to your PC and automatically installed. Without doing a thing, when WannaCry came along almost 2 months later, the machine was protected because the exploit it targeted had already been patched.
It's because of this essential protection provided by automatic updates that those advocating for disabling the process are being labelled the IT equivalents of anti-vaxxers and whilst I don't fully agree with real world analogies like this, you can certainly see where they're coming from. As with vaccinations, patches protect the host from nasty things that the vast majority of people simply don't understand.
This is how consumer software these days should be: self-updating with zero input required from the user. As soon as they're required to do something, it'll be neglected which is why Windows Update is so critical.
Let's start there:. The frustrating part of the debate that ensued after that tweet is not that people weren't proactive in protecting themselves, rather that they were proactively putting themselves at risk by disabling security features. Windows Update is the default position; you install the operating system or receive it pre-installed from your hardware vendor of choice and it looks like this:. And then you go about your business.
By pure coincidence, I rebuilt my desktop machine over the weekend and left Windows Update to do its thing which consequently meant getting a bunch of patches:. I start work early in the morning and often finish late which means I don't want things restarting on me while I'm busy so I customised my active hours:.

We predominantly use Windows 10 Professional at work and I appreciate that updates cannot now be disabled, instead they can be deferred for a period, days for feature updates and 30 windosw for quality updates. We have international staff who may be at sites with poor internet connections and so large downloads aren't a good idea. What I was wondering was whether Windows 10 Enterprise offered any extra control over updates?
Can they be disabled? Was this reply helpful? Yes No. Sorry this didn't help. I wasn't sure if Updatee by design had the ability to control updates compared to Professional seeing as it costs quite a bit more! If I stop the update service and delete the wuauserv file as you mentioned, if I were to update any device at some point, either manually or via patching we use Ivanti then would this install put the wuauserv file back in diwable and restart it so updates would once again be running?

The pages appears to be providing accurate, safe information. There has been a few responses about using local policies to Disable Windows Updates.
Or is it different in Enterprise? This site in other languages x.
Although I could not find an official statement, it appears that these options have disappeared in Windows 10 The Advanced options no longer offer a drop down menu for changing the Automatic Updates setting:. The reason probably is the new Active hours feature see below.
Windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb disable updates free, the missing drop down menu can cause confusion when you configure Windows Update via Group Policy. Djsable option, Never check for updates not recommendedof previous Windows versions, can be configured by disabling the policy.
If you configured one of the policies in Windows 10the Windows Update settings would inform the end user that "some settings are managed by your organization. In the Advanced options of the Windows Update settings, the user could then see what settings the administrator has configured via Group Policy, but would then be unable to change the configuration. End user cant change Windows Update settings in Windows 10 If you apply any of the policies to Windows 10the Windows Updates settings don't show any information about the configuration.
However, based on my tests, the Anniversary Update still supports these policies. When I gave my test machine access to windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb disable updates free internet, without enabling any update policyWindows Update always began by downloading new updates after a couple of minutes.
The Windows Update settings usually displays the updates that are currently downloaded. With the help of the networking frfe tool, I could see that Windows downloaded a couple of megabytes from Windows Update, but then stopped.
Even after several hours, no new updates appeared in the Update History. I also tried the setting Notify for download and notify for install in Windows 10and it worked as expected.
When new updates are available, the user will receive a systray message. A click on the message, will bring the user to the Windows Update settings where the updates can then be downloaded. I didn't try the other Group Policy settings for Automatic Updates, but my guess is that they still work, even though the Update settings no longer show how admins have configured the computer.
Although it is no longer possible to configure the behavior of Automatic Updates within the Windows 10 settings of the Anniversary Update, two new links are now visible: Change active hours and Restart options.
Change active hours and Restart options Windows 10 Visable Active hours option allows you to configure for the times when Windows won't restart because an update is due to be windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb disable updates free. You can configure Active hours through Group Policy. Group Policy "Turn off auto restart for updates during active hours".
If you apply this policy to a Windows 10 machine, the corresponding configuration in the local settings app won't change. However, according to my tests, restarts will then be scheduled corresponding to the Group Policy, and the Winddows hours configuration in the Windows 10 settings will be ignored.
The Restart options can only be configured when a restart is scheduled. In this case, the user will receive a corresponding systray message and the restart time can then be rescheduled. Restart options and Restart required message. Active hours link disappears when a restart is scheduled. The fact that the Group Policy configuration for Automatic Updates is no longer displayed in the Windows 10 settings is confusing.
However, the ability to centrally and locally configure Active hours, as a way of preventing unwanted restarts, is advantageous. I also appreciate being able to configure another restart time once the updates are entetprise. Subscribe enyerprise 4sysops newsletter! Unwanted restarts were certainly the major annoyance of Windows Update.
However, if bandwidth consumption windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb disable updates free your concern, then you might consider working with metered connections. With the help of a little PowerShell script, you can switch an Ethernet connection between metered and not metered. I will cover this option in my next post. Want to write for 4sysops? From all this…. MS has pledged to support Win7 until early We have a groups of PCs that were on and we had added the registry entries to defer updates. And now these PCs are getting the Upgrade. IN the Defer Upgrade was checked and greyed out. We removed the registry entries, we tried the new GP settings and still Defer feature updates stays greys out. I think I also had this problem.
Did you try restarting the Windows Update service? This is just a wild guess. I just need to stop windows update from Downloading updates during normal working hours. Windows 10 seems to suck all the available network bandwidth and this is causing problems in our call center as it is effecting our IP phones. Surely there must be someway to prevent windows updates from downloading between the hours I think you can only schedule the installation of updates.
You could set the network connection to metered with a scheduled task and a modified version of my PowerShell script. Thanks to some comments above mentioning Windows Update serivce. I completely disabled Windows Update service!
What a freakin Windows Update bs! Windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb disable updates free of disabld VirtualBox, it should kill these nerds who invented this instead! We manage our updates via SCCM and we have devices that are still getting rebooted because of the anniversary update. Any enterpriee would be much appreciated, this is getting ridiculous. Did you try configuring the restart options? Forgive me for not understanding this correctly but if we are managing our updates via SCCM why would we need to configure the restart options for the anniversary update?
We are wanting to release the disavle via SCCM and not have the devices windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb disable updates free it directly from Microsoft.
In the case I mentioned earlier, we made the anniversary update available in software center not a push windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb disable updates free a couple of devices on wound up getting from Microsoft and rebooted the device.
Windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb disable updates free SCCM we have configured maintenance windows for devices so are you suggesting that even though we have SCCM configured we still need to add the restart options as a group policy? Thank you in advance. The restart options allow you to schedule reboots after updates have been installed. I never tried this option with Enherprise.
