This problem has persisted for about a month. Occasional peaks occur when opening up programs like illustrator or playing GTA V and other games. But logging in is a hassle because of the slowed down login screen. Windows Explorer seems to crash, because notifications the pop up in the lower third right stay there, and cannot be made to go away, resulting in me having to restart. Is this normal behavior or is it the cause of the issue? This thread is locked.

Even though high disc usage is normal at startup it should not continue for a long time and cause freeze-up's. You can determine what offender is maxing out your Disc usage by using the Task Manager.

Before you shutdown or restart your device open the Task Manager right-click the taskbar and select Task Manager. If it is not expanded click on More Details. Under the Processes tab click in the Disc heading area to show a little arrow pointing down.

The item s that are using the most disc resources will now be shown at the top of the list, in descending order. The task Manager will open with this setting intact the next time you open it. The next time you startup the device and login open the Task Manager using the method described and wait for it no other inputs , it may take a few seconds for it to open due to the high disc usage, but it will.

Thanks for your reply. Sorry for late reply. I have filtered the Disk usage in Task Manager, however it's random with regards to the "highest" service running and is very much low in size - still does not add up. I have run the Dell Diagnostics to determine whether fault with drive, but past both short and long test.

This would happen when no application are running upon startup, therefore nothing to do with Chrome or Skype, etc. Details required : characters remaining Cancel Submit 3 people found this reply helpful. Also, it's interesting that the Snipping Tool is apparently set as one of your Startup Programs, it makes me wonder what the load is in your Startup folder. Many programs have a habit of inserting an entry in the Startup Folder when they install even though there is no reason for the program to load and open in the background at system boot-up, this just makes it take longer for the system to boot and become stable.

In Task Manager go to the Startup tab and see what all is in there, from here you can Enable or Disable the entries without having to remove them from the Startup Folder, this can be very helpful for diagnosing startup issues. It is not normal for File Explorer to behave as you described in your original question. There may be a third party or OE program on the PC that is causing a conflict do to incompatibility with the new Win 10 version.

Thanks for your reply and advice. I have played around with my startup options - see last image with what I currently have enable for startup. Doing absolutely nothing from launching chrome or outlook, etc. First of all I will remind you that it is normal for Disc usage to be high when first booting-up due to the fact that everything that is scheduled to startup at boot has to load up, including the OS.

With a HDD this usually takes anywhere from 2 to 5 minutes under ideal conditions before the high disc usage calms down to a low-ish percentage of use. When a SSD is used as opposed to a HDD the amount of time that the disc usage remains high is greatly reduced as a SSD has no moving parts, and so then also, any fragmentation of the data on the disc that may occur in due course therefore becomes a non-issue in that the data search and retrieval, for the most part, is instantaneous.

There are potentially many different possibilities of potential causes for a prolonged high disc usage issue so this can become difficult to pin down. In properties click on Disc Cleanup and then wait for it.

When the list box appears you can click on each individual item to get a description and then make your choices by checking or clearing the checkbox s to include or exclude items for the cleanup process, when done click OK then Yes.

When that has completed then click on the Tools tab, in the Tools tab click on Optimize, In the resulting window choose the disc you want to work with and then click on Analyze to check how fragmented the drive is and if you wish to perform a defragmentation click on Optimize. Again, there are multiple potential causes for this phenomenon, here are some links for further research that may help, in no particular order:.

Some people do just go to the expense of upgrading to a SSD to then have there machines become as fast as the rest of the hardware onboard allows possible because that is the thing that is the most important to them, above all else.
