The C1 styles are the single worst thing I have ever wasted my money on. Cost a fortune, all are a pretty poor. Do what I do and make your own styles. It really isn't that hard. I would never purchase styles when I have bought the software that makes it possible for me to create my own. Most style packs come with maybe only one or two styles you would actually use anyway.

Their styles are a complete waste of money for me. The fact they went down this road to try to improve revenue weakens the product because you can not use standard LUTs to colour grade. I don't expect any company to sell software and update it perpetually for a one-time fee.

That's not a recipe for survival. But I do expect upgrading to be optional, based on the benefits offered. No bang, no buck. Stitching and decent HDR would be something worth paying for.

The ability to open files from 5 new cameras I don't own would not be worth anything, yet I pay Adobe every month, regardless.

The lifetime licence means the software won't time-out after a while. It doesn't get you updates past the first year They hope users to upgrade, like every other software manufacturer. But you don't have to, contrary to a subscription model.

It's easy to create your own styles, based on your own liking and taste. I don't pay a subscription fee as, like you say, I don't want to pay for features I wont use. Also subscriptions only have two or three different versions of the software and after a while they drop the oldest version so you'd be forced to upgrade if you find a particular version you like.

I prefer the 'one off' cost, then I can upgrade to a newer version several years down the line, therefore saving money in the long run. We should be able to have a one off purchase on software and free camera compatibility upgrades. To me this would be the main reason to getting C1. They still have to spend time and effort supporting the R3, presumably they would have to charge you more for 21 in order to cover those costs Well it isn't like they charge you extra money to support your new camera profile.

Instead they also charge you money to support ALL the other cameras included in an upgrade. So you are in essence paying for a support library far greater than your needs. It is one thing I liked about adobe. After all profile support should in fact not cost extra.

At least not hundreds of euros. It is work they need to do anyways after all. I'm on v20 right now but an upgrade will end up running me as much as a full license when it goes on sale, so unless they don't run as many sales in the future or also put the upgrades on sale they've really devalued their upgrade pricing. Please stop parroting marketing BS. This is not a lifetime license.

But five years down the line, when you are forced to purchase a newer version compatible with your OS and or current camera RAW files, think of the money you saved not having to pay the subscription fee for five years.

In this way they will continue taking your money indefinitely. At the end of the day, there is no difference to Adobe model. If you are on MacOS, then yes the program will only be good for max 5 years before an os upgrade will break it. But on windows, well i still use Photoshop CS2 and I can't see any reason to upgrade it. And I still use Visual Basic 6 which is about 30 years old now and runs on windows If it's any good, it'll save me a round trip or two to other dedicated products.

Just keep in mind that if you buy the manufacturer-specific version, all your RAW files from other manufacturers aren't supported. That used to be a really good deal. They usually do that about May each year if I remember correctly. And with the updates to Lightroom and the R5 profiles, I'm pretty sure I'm going to save money and go with Adobe now. But I'll keep CaptureOne around as long s it's viable for those special color adjustments. To be honest that's a pretty good deal, as you get to use C1 V21 now and then get another years use of C1 Seems ok to me, but I am on a subscription model for Nikon only.

The biggest thing that forces you to upgrade is camera support, since older versions don't support new cameras. If you buy new camera bodies as they come out, you'll probably need the latest version of Capture One. Even more reason not to upgrade your camera or software so often and make use of the perfectly good equipment you already have. I'm generalising of course as everyone's needs differ but I'd say for a lot of dedicated enthusiasts, this is probably true.

I wish there was a subscription based version that lets you only edit maybe photos per months but costs only 10 bucks per month. I figure I'll probably keep getting every other version I remember how much 5, images a year would have cost to develop and print in the days of film and your comment just seems out of touch and even a bit ludicrous.

SilvanBromide, umm, criticizing another poster of being "out of touch" and then relating to the costs of the film days at the same time In any case, I also think that 5k images isn't actually that bad. I don't have that many that I keep and still I find a software such as C1 very helpful. And that a few cents per image over the span of a year or two isn't unreasonable compared to most of the alternatives digital OR film. So you can pay for the next version now and get it later..

Yes I have the current C1 and have upgraded for some time, but its still, by a mile, the most expensive raw development software, with the worst noise reduction of them all - but of you want to just throw images into it and get results with a nice pop it isn't bad Exactly my thought. The next versione is just around the corner so this buy one and get one free scheme is quite a stretch. Perhaps this is a move away from enticing punters with discounts to buy sight unseen versions like last time.

I don't think this offer is aimed at people like you who already have the current version, but it can be enticing for those who don't already have C1 or are on an older version. If you don't know how to use NR properly, then you really shouldn't comment. I agree with those who are feeling burned by the increased cost of upgrading with very limited return, but to say that C1 is inferior at NR or pretty much any other major image alteration element simply is not in tune with reality.

The full license and subscription pricing isn't an issue for those who want the best possible RAW processing - and have done the proper comparisons with the offerings that have so clearly fallen behind. I personally think it is great software that allows me to edit images in a very efficient way thanks to, for instance, the configurable keyboard shortcuts.

However, it does have its peculiarities. Halos at the edges of darkened areas e. These can be corrected to some extent with negative structure. I've done a lot of work on NR and I'm very comfortable saying C! Alas we can't post sample images here. In C1P I found it still has a ton of artefacts after you lose the obvious noise I could get the people looking quite good, but everything else was nasty.

Plus annoyingly there will always be a deal along to make you feel bad if you paid the full price I'll wait and see if they improved the database speed. I can open my image collection in Media Pro and search through it in 1 minute. In Capture One it takes 1 hour. So I'll stay on version 20 for now. And fixed all the various catalog related bugs and instabilities, at least on the Windows platform. There is always special when a company is "asking" for more money.

The bait will attract the sheep for sure! As a long time LR user, subscription model, who bought C1 20 with the concept of perpetual license, no more subscription. Seeming like the benefits to perpetual license are more an illusion of control than an actual functional benefit. So far, I take photos commercially and it is not a problem for me to buy the latest version of CO I still skip one version. However, after I finish a commercial photo shoot, or something forces me to quit or, for example, a new version of CO does not bring me anything like 20 vs 21 nothing forces me to buy a new version.

What will I get when I stop paying Adobe subscriptions. It's not that difficult. I mean I've been using the same C1 version since early , with no intent to upgrade until major new features like HDR land. Choosing when and for how much I decided to upgrade is still somewhat more flexible than the sub model IMO, but there's also a ton of value in Adobe's CC sub.

OP: i feel your pain pal. I got the same bombardment since I refused to upgrade to a smartphone all those years ago. A single day doesn't go by without some cheeky profiteering company trying to tell me what I am missing out. And the manufacturer of my car now tells me I can buy a new electric model that goes times the distance for the same cost compared to the petrol one they sold me last year! Greedy bastards! I wish they would just stop developing new things every year, or at least upgrade me for free!

Heh, I'm curious to see if they keep handling sales the same way and running them as frequently, it nearly makes upgrade pricing irrelevant IMO So yeah imma wait a bit on v20 as well. I'm glad to see them giving a bit more information on the upgrades than they have in the past few years. This also seems like a bit meatier upgrade that the last few. Will wait for DXO Photolab 5 than. Let's wait and see what they have to offer.

Because they do camera specific versions for those three. I think for a long time Sony was the only one. You got a free version and can still get the free version made available to you if you bought a Sony. The cash is for the full version which used to be called Capture One Pro I think.

They changed the naming a couple of years ago confusingly. Why should I as a owner of a different brand camera pay more? Let Capture One make the same price point for every user to make me a customer. They need customers, as a potential use I have multiple alternatives. The brand-specific versions are cheaper because they have less functionality they only work with raw files from one brand. As already said, if the other manufacturers aren't interested in such a deal, that's not really the fault of Phase One.

There is a full version that does all raw files of all brands. Then there is a paid pro version that only does raw files for Sony, Nikon or Fujifilm - then there is a cut down version for those 3 systems which only work for their raw files and is free.

No lens data, no serial number, few lens profiles, no pixel shift support, no tethering etc. I have been asking CO for better Pentax support for nearly a decade - response -- crickets. I still do not know if they support the Z PEF files.

There are work arounds but you have to edit the EXIF in order to get it to work. There is a comparison on their website. Colour balance, a tool that lets you adjust the colour tone for shadow, mids and highlights is a tool well worth the upgrade for me. I have stopped asking for features. I was contacted by phone last year asking if I was interested in getting a Phase One body by Phase One.

I asked why Pentax features were not supported and the guy on the other side of the conversation said paraphrasing "some vendors don't give out that information - our hands are tied".

I did not mention ExifTool's ability to translate lens data - so I just didn't bring it up. PDL The excuse given by the C1 representative is nonsense. I told them how to get at the lens data and every company worth their salt should be able to figure it out. Lightroom properly displays information from Pentax cameras, there really is no insurmountable barrier here. Note that C1 is developed by Capture One these days, i. Capture One just thinks that Pentax is too insignificant to even warrant the couple of hours it would take to implement proper support.

I agree that C1 is better than LR if only because one can still get a perpetual license but it still has serious deficiencies regarding UI design. The recent modal exporter dialogue experiment is just one example of many minor but quite impactful bad decisions.

Your comments on the UI are not broadly held. While the exporter design was a questionable choice, it was not as bad as you made out. They changed it so it is now on available again on the primary tab list. It was different, but I did not have a fit over it.

Sony has just released a trio of impressively small, light, ultrawide lenses for APS-C. These lenses are designed for vloggers, so Chris decided to film himself and find out how they perform. It was first created with tethered image capturing in mind, but quickly branched out to a more full-fledged image processing program.

Now it offers exceptional RAW image file processing, image cataloging, layers, local adjustments, keystone adjustments, as well as just about all the features one would expect out of a pro image editing app.

The paid versions all have a free day trial period, and I highly recommend you use this to have a play around. There are several versions of Capture One, each with various other options to choose from, which can make the initial download process rather confusing. See latest price here. Even if you own Sony or Fujifilm cameras see below your best best is to download the free trial of the full version of Capture One Pro 12 here, with support for over different cameras.

In Capture One Pro, there are plenty of options when right-clicking. Every program takes some getting used to, and Capture One is no exception. Instead, everything sits in one interface and you toggle through buttons to change functions. Right-click options and short-cuts abound, and like Photoshop many of the tools have a number of other options when you right-click on their buttons.

Here the film strip is on the bottom, similar to a Lightroom layout. Making the transition from Lightroom? Simply put your filmstrip on the bottom panel and the adjustment panels to the right. You can even assign the same keyboard shortcuts to Capture One Pro as you use in Lightroom. This is particularly awesome if you have an established workflow and know what you use the most.

All this being said, the high learning curve often has me frustrated. Simple things like renaming files or switching from grid to single image view are different in Capture One and they all take some getting used to.

Capture One Pro is feature-rich with just about everything a photographer needs in an editing app. As far as photo editors go, there are a couple of places where Capture One just rocks it. Here are a few of the other advantages of using Capture One Pro over Lightroom, or most of the other image editing softwares out there:.

Each brand has their own special recipe for rendering RAW files, but Capture One has long been known for being exceptional. Take a quick look at the video below to see how the photographer uses Capture One Pro to edit high-end fashion portraits.

As far as the level and selection of standard adjustment tools are concerned — exposure, contrast, shadows, highlights, white balance, and so on — Capture One is up there with the best. Some things are done differently, however. To edit straight-up saturation you need to go to another tab.

Capture One Pro comes with an excellent Keystone adjustment. Pro only, not Express. There are plenty of useful autocorrect options for just about every tool, and these work better than my version of Lightroom. The auto levels adjustment seems particularly spot on. The Express version is obviously a bit more limited.

Capture One has these too. When you use layers in Capture One Pro , you can make targeted adjustments to your photos and still use the majority of the image editing tools available, not just the ones in a given tool. This is a huge benefit for those who like a fine level of control over photo manipulation.

For mask creation you can paint them in manually, create a linear gradient mask, or a radial gradient mask similar to Luminar, actually. It also offers a feathering tool and edge refinements. The Luma Range feature in Capture One Pro is a particularly useful way of selecting areas of an image.

Everything from Levels to Color Balance tools work in layers, and you can adjust the opacity of each edit layer — something that can only be done by way of a third party plugin in Lightroom see these Lightroom Tips for more info. This latest version of Capture One Pro 12 now has luminosity masks. From there you can adjust the affected color range, hue, saturation and lightness.

The 3-Way option even lets you adjust the color tint separately in the shadow, midtone and highlight areas. Do you want to affect the blues in your photo, but not the blue-greens?

Need to smooth out the skin tones? No problem. Simply choose the Skin Tone tab, select a color range, and adjust the uniformity sliders. The Express version just has the Basic tab. However, if you want to have complete control over your color , Capture One certainly wins hands down over Lightroom and everyone else in the same niche.

If you shoot in a studio, odds are you know the value of shooting tethered. Most studio photographers who shoot tethered already use Capture One. Tethering features in Capture One Pro makes it the obvious choice for studio photographers. With it you can control just about everything via the tether, including details as particular as the flash curtain sync mode.

If you were ever thinking of shooting tethered, Capture One is the editing software to try first. It also just looks better — almost on par with Photoshop which is where I usually do my more difficult spot healing.

If you send your work off to an editor or work with a team, Capture One Pro has an annotations feature that makes collaboration much easier. Definitely helpful for collaborative editing or sending an image with notes off to a client. Capture One allows you to organize according to your photography sessions instead of of using the catalog.

Many say that Capture One actually outperforms Lightroom in terms of both speed and stability. You can apply Styles to enhance curves, saturation and tonal adjustments in your images — all without changing key capture parameters like exposure and white balance. There are several Styles available by famous photographers, helping you emulate their color grading. One of the huge benefits of using Fujifilm X-series camera are the built-in film simulations like Acros, Classic Chrome, Velvia etc.

Capture One 12 now adds the ability to change the starting point of your editing to one of the film simulations, as Curves within the Base Characteristics Tool. There are a few places where Capture One falls short. For those of us who use them regularly, this could be an issue. Into Nik or Topaz filters? No go. This is a shame since distortion correction must be applied manually. I find the problems with X adapters strange since historically C1 has reputation of being the best raw converter for Fuji x-trans files, and it also has Fuji film simulations.

No wonder C1 has attracted Fuji users. I have complained about this repeatedly to C1. In my testing, the panorama stitch is actually very good. C1 was able to stitch a highly complex set of images that Affinity was unable. C1 is a small company and they lack the bandwidth to both develop new products and clean-up the mess with C1, I suspect that it will be a long time before we see any major improvements in C1, If C1,22 does not get serious and deliver their pre-release advertised performance, I doubt that I will never buy another C1 pre-release package again.

They got me on 22, but they will not get me on 23! Exactly - If Capture One can't get their products to work as advertised in the first place then its pretty ridiculous and pretentious to release an iPad version of their software.

Who is going to buy software of which by now is known NOT to work as they promised. We can see that apple does the same with their various OS updates.

Although the iPad doesn't have a file managing system like Finder or like on Windows. For me, tethering is a must for the iPad, but for long jobs, charging and tethering with one hub on the iPad would not be possible. The Surface Pro 8 would be better, which is basically a miniature desk top with a similar weight and portability to an iPad.

But for the masses an iPad maybe more common and most may not use tethering, so could be a good option. Actually there is a file management system on iOS in which you can place, load, copy, open, duplicate, share and move files of any kind and within and from folders.

It is easy to access and your are able to exchange files to and from your NAS and cloud platforms. I can also seamlessly exchange files to and from my Mac with any iOS product. Looks to me you never used any Apple iOS product for years already and have been stuck in your own believes. Hi Francis - thanks for correcting me. Your first paragraph is fine and helpful.

As for your well worded gentlemanly "Looks to me you never used any Apple iOS product for years already and have been stuck in your own believes". There was no reason to write that tone. I still don't know why people do that, given there was no animosities to anyone. With those two the society would be in much better place. Seems like I have succeeded.

Such a devilish move, right? Eh, iOS does have a file manager but, it's so cumbersome to use. You have no status bar on how far something has progressed on transferring, and if the iPad goes to sleep, you have to start all over again. They raise the price and offer nothing new for working pro photographers.

I will never be editing a customers job on a Ipad. I am look at other programs at this point to move to. Not being held hostage with the new price plan they started. Do the iPad versions e. Lightroom work out of the cloud, or do you need to load the actual image files to the iPad?

Wondering how C1P will handle this. When I'm away from home I use my iPad to offload photos from my Sony camera to it, then Lightroom takes them and uploads them to Adobe cloud. But when I open the app I can use any image in my cloud storage. I'd like to see C1 offer integration with real cloud storage AWS, Azure, etc as well as pre-configured or consumer cloud options. The biggest limiter on the Adobe side for me with LR is being tied to Adobe's cloud solution.

It will be local files only when it launches. Online cloud sync is on the roadmap. But it won't come before Capture One 23 since the sync wouldn't work with the current version. They've been milking it for some time. A lot of features maps, face recognition were implemented half-baked, and have never really progressed, presumably because no one uses half-baked features.

The only real progress in my recent memory is the new masking tools. They have some catching up to do. My bad, I must have missed it. Thanks for pointing that out. Still, good to have options rather than complain about them.

I have LR on my Samsung tablet. These days, a huge phablet size phone isn't so different in size or function from an actual tablet. There are different versions for phone and tablet. For a while only certain features were available for each. If you're not making use of the ability to edit an manipulate your photo catalog remotely the joke's on you LOL give me a break, anyone claims they are needing serious editing tools on a phone is full of it.

I use it all the time as do most colleagues. I can rate, cull export and edit when I have a few minutes downtime. Then I can export or share them. I can do this to all my synced files. Using presets and the latest select tools mean for a lot of things it's good enough. Heavy editing I can use the laptop or tablet but everything done on the phone is synced up.

It's also especially nice to do easy first pass edits on images remotely. Basic crops, maybe adjusting the exposure values of an image to see if it has potential or if it should be culled. There's lots of benefits to remote catalog work when you're in the "Contact Sheet" portion of the workflow before you do the heavy edits on the keepers.

And then the more controversial but definitely business friendly option: The ability to do a quickie onsite edit of a RAW you just took for promoting your brand on social media. A picture doesn't have to hold up to a full 40x60 print or be art gallery worthy if you're posting it to social media.

But if that gorgeous shot your just took gets viral traction and more clients looking at your work while you're still out creating it is a huge boost to your brand in this internet age. Timing is important.

Posting your gorgeous autumn portrait shoot examples won't get nearly as many bites in February as they will when the leaves are still on fire. I get the sense that CaptureOne is following Adobe The only difference is that C1 does still offer a perpetual license but I wonder how long that will last for I'm just saying that it seems that CaptureOne is trying to catch up to Adobe in multiple aspects.

Apparently they see the value in the subscription model I guess since they adopted it and probably price it just right so people would probably get that over a perpetual subscription and upgrading manually every few years.

There's nothing wrong with this approach but it seems that CaptureOne is following Adobe footsteps both good and bad I guess. If you shoot tethered, C1 is nicer. Being able to use sessions makes life easier as I don't need bloated lR catalogs to deal with.

Both have their pros and cons liek anything. They revealed this on their Instagram account. I've just recently been doing shooting tethered and I'm wondering what C1 does different? I can group Lightroom sessions as well.

Have it save to separate folders for each shoot. Auto create a collection of each shoot if I want to. Auto add specific Keywords to each shot. Apply a1 user preset edit to each photo as I shoot. It's all in one catalog, but I like that. I have one catalog for the entire year and the shoots are grouped in collections.

C1 supports sessions, versus catalogs, although I thought that a session was similar to a catalog except that you can set it up to automate some of the tasks for you, such as folders for different shoots, but otherwise employed a similar catalog-like method of tracking and managing files. Although perhaps C1 doesn't need to "ingest" the file after it is shot.

LR I think ingests the file as you would during import which may slow things down. I don't think the differences are that big. Some people just don't care for the LR experience, but I think at a lower-level both are more similar than they are different.

It's usually the UI and the way the different software handle editing and to an extent, the math behind the scenes that's used. For me, LR's tethering is more than plenty and I think they have perhaps tweaked it I haven't used it that much in the past 2 years so I can't recall the major differences over that time, if there were any between versions of LRC.

With regards to file management, currently you can edit on the go with the iPad and send to your desktop when you get home. We also understand your needs for working in the cloud. So there are some initial limitations. Not all functions were shown, e. With that said, most of the default exposure tool tab from the desktop seems to be there.

I'm sure someone will chime in with Apple software coding experience.. In other words, isn't it easier to develop for iPad and M1 now? Wouldn't code for one mostly work for the other? It is also two different environments in which to implement the user experience. Looking forward to the first reviews. I highly doubt that they will bring it to "iPhone" rather iPad! Also, aren't there docks you can get for iPhones, so they can act somewhat like a desktop?

If so, then C1 for an iphone might make sense if someone didn't own an iPad. I know some Samsung phones have docks, so they can operate like a desktop, and so one could use Adobe LR Mobile using a dock with a screen, mouse ,and keyboard. Using it on the iPhone itself, not sure, probably less useful than a tablet version though due to the screen size.

I don't know if it would work on an iPhone or not. Back in , I could Bluetooth a mouse and keyboard to my Galaxy S5, then use the proffered HDMI adapter and it was a quite usable little desktop style device. It surfed the web and played Netflix and could do word processing, etc. Well my point is that the display size is ridiculous to do any professional work.

Not what you could do if you had to plug it in somewhere or add another device. Well it's pretty useless to my old eyes, but apparently the cool kids are editing pictures on their phones these days. By editing, do you mean using filters and presets? For quick uploads to Instagram, sure. But for actual processing of photos like you would in general on a computer I think the phone version will be challenging, again unless you use a dock so you can run your phone like a desktop with a mouse and keyboard and display.

That's a good question, I don't know how far folks are going. But even Ted Forbes did a video a couple years back about editing as in full on processing photos on the go. Using phone and tablet together. Hey, it's not my jam but apparently it is someone's, because the software is out there. I agree on the iPad part as a "emergency" solution or for quick tethered shoots on the fly.

My final editing will never leave my proper computer with monitor. I only do this for hobby photos on the go. For hobbyists I think it's fine, although as I had said earlier, it may be challenging. I would much rather do it on a 32" display at home, but I've used my tablet a few times at shoots to get pics on the Socials more quickly. My old eyes don't like it as much, but it's still a valid and occasionally necessary option-at the very least a value-add for a working pro.

I like the idea of editing on my tablet but not sure my old regular iPad will have the power to run it. FuhTeng, real enthusiasts or Pros do not edit photos on a 'tablet'! Most people do that kind of thing on a desktop, if not at least a high end laptop. How much money would it cost you to put C1 on your tablet? Just leave. As for how much money would it cost to put it on my tablet, that was the point of my original but were you too busy embarrassing yourself to notice that. I edit on my iPads currently a Pro Especially while traveling.
